"What has he found who has lost Allah,
what has he lost who has found Allah?"
- Ibn Ata Illah al-Iskanderi
Our Story
Shaykh Saeed Warsama, Dr Samir, and Naushad, the founding members, first met a few years ago and instantly recognised each other as fellow spiritual pilgrims on a journey to God ﷻ. In one Melbourne evening, they discussed their shared love of Godﷻ, knowledge, and travel. With this, ThreePilgrims was born - a seed watered by the love of sacred travel in seeking God ﷻ.
ThreePilgrims is driven by the primordial desire to return to the Divine source and the Quranic injunction to travel the earth (siru fi’l ‘ard) and witness God’s signs (ayat), Q (29:20). The name ThreePilgrims is inspired by the famous spiritual pilgrims of the past who travelled throughout the Islamic World and beyond in search of sacred knowledge (‘ilm), spiritual blessing (baraka), and, divine proximity (qurb min Allah ﷻ).
Philosophy of travel
We aim to craft purposeful itineraries in the outward landscape of God’s ﷻ vast earth to cultivate the art of spiritual travel in the inner landscape of the soul.
Tourist vs. Traveller
A tourist visits as many destinations as possible, snapping thousands of photos while merely skirting the destination’s surface in haste, without any deep understanding.
A traveller seeks an immersive, meaningful and soul-transforming experience, hoping for a deep connection to God ﷻ, their self, and the culture or places they visit. The purpose is to contemplate, expand their horizon, and elevate their level of spiritual consciousness.
ThreePilgrims cultivates the traveller in all of us, as we journey together in reading God’s ﷻ signs.
Letting Go vs. Holding on
The human’s natural disposition is to to let go of egotistical dispositions of the mind and soul that lead to harmful traits. Rather, it embraces the innate disposition of fitrah - wishing the good.
Listening, Attending & Attuning
To truly be a traveller who immerses themselves in the landscapes and cultures they visit, it is important to cultivate the art of listening, attending, and attuning.
Presence (Hudur)
The Islamic tradition teaches us that the point of all our worship is proximity (qurb) to God ﷻ (ﷲ). Proximity is only possible, as Imam Al-Ghazali teaches in his Ihya’, if there is presence of heart (hudur al-qalb). Presence to what? Presence to the Divine Presence in the present moment!
